Pharmacy History
Healthway Compounding Pharmacy of Saginaw, Michigan is owned and operated by Michael E. Collins, R.Ph., F.I.A.C.P., who has been practicing the art of compounding for over 35 years. Collins opened Healthway Pharmacy in St. Charles, Michigan in 1985; originally starting out as a traditional pharmacy. Shortly thereafter, Collins saw the need for the formulation of medications outside of what was commercially available, so he built a compounding lab within the pharmacy and began compounding specialty medications. Soon, the word spread of these individualized medications and in 1994 a new pharmacy was built hosting a fully operational state-of-the-art compounding lab. Collins’ practice grew by leaps and bounds and physicians from across the state of Michigan were ordering specialty prescription medication. To accommodate these patients, a second pharmacy, Healthway Compounding Pharmacy, whose primary focus is compounding, was opened in Saginaw, Michigan in January of 2001.
The pharmacy is a professional office style practice that is unique, compared to other community-based pharmacies, both in atmosphere and in handling patient needs. Working with top pain specialists and OB/Gyns throughout the state, Healthway’s focus has leaned toward pain management and women’s health. The practice also handles numerous other custom-made prescriptions, including a fair amount of compounded veterinary prescriptions. Healthway has been instrumental in aiding veterinarians in developing unique combinations of medications and dosage forms for treating animals.
Healthway offers physician referred, patient consultations in the areas of menopause and pain, a separate fee is charged for all consultations. Collins is well respected in the medical community for his knowledge of bio-identical hormone replacement, pain management in areas such as female pelvic pain and other chronic neuropathic pain syndromes. He is recognized by his colleagues as being in the top 10% of compounding pharmacists in the country for his innovation and dedication to the art of compounded medicines.
Healthway’s interest for the future lies in nutrition, integrated medicine and practice-based outcomes in a community setting.
