Understanding Hormone Changes in Women
Throughout a woman’s lifetime, hormone levels naturally shift. These changes may happen gradually or feel more sudden, especially during perimenopause and menopause. Some women experience mild symptoms, while others notice changes that interfere with daily life, relationships, sleep, mood, or overall quality of life.
Hormone-related symptoms may include:
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
- Mood changes
- PMS-related concerns
- Low libido
- Fatigue
- Sleep changes
- Weight changes
- Painful periods
- Irregular cycles
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort
- Fertility-related concerns
- Endometriosis-related symptoms
- Fibrocystic breast concerns
- Bone health concerns
These symptoms can have many possible causes, including hormone imbalance, thyroid concerns, adrenal stress, nutritional status, medications, lifestyle factors, and other health conditions. Testing and evaluation by a healthcare provider are important before beginning hormone therapy.
What Is BHRT?
BHRT stands for Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. Bioidentical hormones are designed to have the same chemical structure as hormones naturally produced by the human body.
Hormones commonly discussed in women’s hormone therapy may include:
- Estrogens
- Progesterone
- Testosterone
- DHEA
- Pregnenolone
BHRT is not one-size-fits-all. Each woman’s symptoms, hormone levels, health history, goals, and risk factors should be reviewed by a healthcare provider before therapy begins.
Healthway Compounding Pharmacy does not diagnose hormone imbalance or prescribe hormone therapy. Our role is to prepare the prescribed medication and support patients and providers with compounding expertise.
Why Compounded Hormone Therapy May Be Considered
A healthcare provider may consider compounded hormone therapy when a patient needs a customized strength, dosage form, or ingredient profile that is not commercially available.
Compounded BHRT may be considered when a patient needs:
- A customized hormone strength
- A combination prescribed specifically for the patient
- A dosage form that is easier to use
- A preparation without certain dyes, fillers, preservatives, or other inactive ingredients
- A topical cream or gel
- A capsule
- A sublingual troche or lozenge
- A suppository
- Gradual dose adjustments based on provider monitoring
Compounding allows the provider and pharmacy to work together to prepare a medication that aligns with the patient’s treatment plan.
A Personalized, Provider-Guided Approach
No two women are exactly alike. A hormone plan that works well for one patient may not be appropriate for another. That is why Healthway emphasizes individualized care, provider collaboration, and ongoing monitoring.
Your healthcare provider may review symptoms, health history, lab results, risk factors, and treatment goals before determining whether hormone therapy is appropriate. Once a prescription is written, Healthway can prepare the medication in the prescribed strength and dosage form.
MenoPausitive Approach™
Healthway Compounding Pharmacy offers personal and confidential hormone consultations for women who have questions about BHRT, compounded dosage forms, and medication options. Make sure your prescriber is on board as pharmacists cannot prescribe medications and following consultation your prescriber will be the one issuing a prescription.
Step One: Patient Questionnaire
Before your consultation, you will complete a confidential hormone consultation form. This questionnaire helps our team better understand your symptoms, health history, concerns, and goals.
Step Two: Hormone Level Review
Your provider may order lab testing to evaluate hormone levels and related health markers. In some cases, blood serum testing may be used. Saliva hormone testing may also be discussed when appropriate.
Testing may help provide additional information about hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol. Your healthcare provider determines which testing method is appropriate for your care.
Step Three: Pharmacist Consultation
During your scheduled consultation, a Healthway pharmacist can review your questionnaire, discuss medication-related questions, explain dosage form options, and help identify information that may be helpful to share with your provider.
Consultations may also include discussion of lifestyle, nutrition, supplement considerations, and medication use when appropriate.
A consultation fee may apply, speak to a team member.
Step Four: Provider Prescription
BHRT requires a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. Healthway pharmacists do not prescribe hormone therapy. If your provider determines that hormone therapy is appropriate, they can send a prescription to Healthway Compounding Pharmacy.
Our team can work directly with your provider to prepare the prescribed medication and discuss formulation considerations.
*Consultation with the pharmacist is not deemed in place of or equal to a thorough review and check by your physician. Nothing herein is intended to replace or influence the independent judgment of any licensed professional. Consult with your healthcare professional. Frequently Asked Questions
What symptoms may lead someone to ask about hormone therapy?
Women may ask their provider about hormone therapy if they are experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, low libido, sleep disruption, vaginal dryness, fatigue, painful periods, or other hormone-related concerns. Symptoms alone do not confirm hormone imbalance, so evaluation is important.
Why would a provider prescribe compounded hormone therapy?
A provider may consider compounded hormone therapy when a patient needs a customized strength, a specific dosage form, a combination preparation, or a formulation without certain inactive ingredients.
Do I need testing before starting hormone therapy?
Your healthcare provider may recommend testing based on your symptoms, age, health history, medications, and treatment goals. Testing may include blood work, saliva testing, or other evaluations determined by your provider.
What dosage forms are available for compounded hormones?
Depending on the prescription, compounded hormones may be prepared as topical creams, gels, capsules, sublingual troches or lozenges, suppositories, or other provider-directed dosage forms.
Are compounded hormones FDA-approved?
No. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are not reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are dispensed. Your provider can help you weigh the potential risks and benefits of hormone therapy.
Can Healthway work directly with my provider?
Yes. Healthway Compounding Pharmacy works with healthcare providers throughout Michigan to support provider-directed compounded hormone prescriptions.
